The Cost per copy on copiers / printers With toner/ drum cartridges |
|
Oftentimes manufacturers will estimate a cost per copy and a copy yield based on page coverage. Usually the manufacturer bases the yield on 5% toner coverage.
Ink/toner consumption is usually described by printer vendors as the number of 8.5x11 pages with 5% filling of toner (normal text), which can be printed using one cartridge.
If a cartridge costs $89.00 and the manufacturers yield is 2000 copies based on 5% toner coverage the theoretical cost per copy would be $89.00/2000 copies = 4.45 cents per copy |

8.86 % toner coverage |

The screen shot to the left is a free downloadable program from the internet that establishes toner coverage. When the program was used to calculate the toner coverage of the 3 sentences above, the program reported 8.86% toner coverage, or 1.77 pages at 5% toner coverage.
2000 copies / 1.77 = 1,130 pages per cartridge.
$89.00 / 1,130 copies= 7.8 cents per copy true cost on copies of the three sentences above. 7.8 cents per copy equates to $78.00 for 1000 copies not including paper. Copy paper ranges in cost from $5.00 to $7.00 per 1000 for 20 lb paper. The cost of the machine of $300.00 to $500.00 becomes negligible if you plan on running more than 15,000 copies. |

|
If your annual volume is 1000 copies buy a cartridge based machine. If your annual volume is 10,000 copies, a commercial grade machine will be best. If a customer runs 10,000 copies per year and they want to use the cartridge based machine for 3 years they may have spent $780.00 X 3 years= $2340.00 |
